This week at MYDC, Gabby Miller - a MYDC committee member led the meeting and explained what a Mock UN is. She then handed out cards which had a UN member country on them and a bit of information about it, which you and a partner had to represent. We then read a resolution that was made up of 11 clauses that described how the UN was going to encourage countries to commit more money into education, promote free education, and developed countries would put a portion of their GDP into developing countries' education systems. After researching the policy of our countries on education, we wrote down changes to the clauses which we thought were necessary based on the views of our country.
Each representative in turn announced a change that they thought was necessary to one of the clauses and the other representatives asked them questions about their change and made statements to push their own agendas. Once all of the delegates had asked their questions or the country advocating for the change refused any more questions the delegation proceeded to a vote where each country could vote for, against, or choose to abstain from the vote.
It was fascinating to debate against representatives of countries that had different ideologies to mine, like the UK which has somewhat similar views on education, but has different views on using AI.
Overall it was quite interesting learning the process of how a resolution is passed and the inner workings of the UN.
